Butler University Founder and Benefactor Ovid Butler

Abstract

Ovid Butler (1801-1881) was a lawyer, abolitionist, journalist, land developer, and founder of Butler University. He was active in the Disciples of Christ and the Free Soil Party. His home still stands at 1306 N. Park. Arriving in Indianapolis in 1836, he practiced law until 1849, then directed his energies into founding a university.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
