Portrait of James Dean From an Original Photograph

Abstract

James Dean was born on February 8, 1931 in Marion, Indiana and grew up in Fairmount. He starred in East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause, and Giant. He died on September 30, 1955, the result of a car accident in California. Mark Dillman is the artist.IHS does not sell reproductions of this painting. The painting is an 18” x 14” oil on canvas portrait of James Dean done by Indianapolis artist, Mark Dillman in 1989. The work was commissioned by the Indiana Historical Society Press editors for the fall 1989 issue of Traces. The painting is based on a photograph taken by Fred Wood when James Dean attended a dance at Fairmont High School in February 1955. The painting is shown on the cover of Traces and the original photograph is featured on page 22.Grant County Journe
