Environmental inequality in Hebei

Abstract

China’s rapid economic development has brought on some serious changes to the industrial landscape. More and more industries has moved their production to China leading to an exponential increase in the pollution levels of both water and air throughout the country. These increases has in recent years shown to affect the health of those exposed to them. However, recent research has shown that the poorer rural population often is more affected by the pollution as governmental policies in recent years has decreased the levels of pollution in urban areas. This indicates that environmental inequality exists in China where the wellbeing of the marginally stronger urban population is preferred over the poorer rural population. In our project we have chosen to investigate how environmental inequality is present in the case of Hebei. Hebei was chosen as it has a large industry and serious issues of pollution. To investigate this we first examined the historical development of the industry in China and how it’s related to the issue of pollution and rising health risks. We then investigated how environmental inequality can be seen in the case of Hebei by examining and analyzing several relevant areas. In the end we had a discussion of whether the environmental inequality gap had increased or decreased in recent years in order to conclude on the future of environmental inequality in Hebei. Our results indicate that the future of environmental inequality is largely dependent on the future behavior of the Chinese government as there are trends indicating that it both can increase and decrease
