Nordhavn - A city for everyone?

By Esben Juliussen, Louise Mønsted, Katrine Petersen, Chrostoffer Bjerregaard, Caroline Hansen and Natasha Roe

The following project is about the new district Nordhavn, in Copenhagen. Our focus in this project and the problem we will examine is about the development company By & Havns overall vision a social sustainable city and one out of six smaller visions a city for everyone. In order to give insight in the development of Nordhavn, as a new city district, there will be given a historical description of Nordhavn and an explanation of the visions. In this project we analyse the reliability of By & Havns visions using, John Andersen and Jørgen Elm Larsens theories about social sustainability and selected sociological theories from Pierre Bourdieu and Zygmunt Baumans. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, the report will answer empirically, whether it is possible for Nordhavn to become a city for everyone. Based on the real estate prices, the amount and the prices on the public houses, it is concluded that there is a high risk of a ghettoization of Nordhavn without social diversity. Furthermore the thesis discusses whether it is By & Havns intentions to realize their visions or if the visions are merely a rhetorical device used to cover up a hidden agenda
