This paper aims to give an overview of the ‘professional\ud doctorate’ and its special characteristics. Some of the\ud differences between this and a traditional Doctor of\ud Philosophy are considered, and a short reflection gives\ud insight into the author’s personal doctoral journey. The\ud professional doctorate as a structured programme for\ud experienced practitioners to develop and advance their\ud practice is explored, with the interprofessional aspect of a\ud cohort-based programme stressed as a positive factor in\ud the student’s journey. As reflection and reflexivity are\ud embedded within the professional doctorate, it is seen as\ud especially appropriate for current healthcare practice
