Abstract

This report will give an overview about imaging Fourier transform spectrometers (IFTS) for the thermal and medium infrared range. Therefore related technologies important for IFTS are shown. A short introduction of different types of IFTS will be given and specific questions are pointed out. This part is followed by examples of projected and realised IFTS. Further, scientific missions related to IFTS are discussed. The report continues with a discussion about technologies which are important for IFTS in comparison with single FTS (Fourier transform spectrometer). Major questions are imaging infrared optics and the optical parts of the interferometer requiring high accuracy and detector technologies including cooling systems. A critical point is also on-board data processing for IFTS, because of the large number of parallel channels. Finally two examples of imaging Fourier transform spectrometers are represented and critical parts are explained.
