Entertaining genre of Matthijs Naiveu : depicting festivities and performances at the dawn of the 'Theatre Age'

Abstract

This thesis discusses the oeuvre of the Leiden born artist Matthijs Naiveu (1647-1726) and gives a coherent overview of his work for the first time. Central interest is given to his genre paintings that depict both in-door and out-door festivities and theatrical performances. This thesis also includes a preliminary catalogue of Naiveu's paintings
