UPA. Old Struggles in a New Nation

Ukraine as a relatively new nation is struggling to find a national identity that is approved by both Ukrainiphile and Russophile part of the population. In this discussion the ultranationalist Second World War partisan organization OUN-UPA seems to play a symbolic role. Recognition of OUN-UPA as a legitimate resistance movement is an important issue for West Ukrainians, while for Russphile East Ukrainians their recognition is felt as a threat to their identity
