Le raffigurazioni di utensili nelle iscrizioni funerarie: da immagini parlanti a simbolo

Abstract

Nei monumenti iscritti, in particolare in quelli funerari, spesso compaiono alcune raffigurazioni di utensili che integrano il testo e aiutano a comprenderne meglio il messaggio. Così una forfex e un codex possono alludere al mestiere di magister pecoris o le cucurbitulae, impiegate per praticare il salasso, alla professione di medico. Un caso particolare, però, è rappresentato dagli strumenti propri di costruttori, muratori e lapicidi, come il pes, la libella, la regula e il perpendiculum. Questi, infatti, molte volte, non indicano la professione del defunto, ma sembrano avere piuttosto un valore simbolico ed alludere a sue qualità, come la rettitudine, l’equilibrio, l’equità, doti che egli ha saputo «costruire» con un paziente lavoro su se stesso.On the inscribed monuments, mostly on tombstones, there are often some representations of tools, that integrate the text and help a better understanding of the epigraphic message. So a forfex and a codex may allude to the job of magister pecoris or cucurbitulae, used to practice bloodletting, to the medical profession. A special case, however, is represented by the tools of builders, masons and stonecutters, like the pes, the libella,the regula and the perpendiculum. These, in fact, many times, do not indicate the profession of the person quoted in the monument, but rather they seem to have a symbolic value and allude to some of his moral qualities, such as rectitude, moderation, impartiality, qualities that he has been able to «build» with patient work on himself
