Empirical mode decomposition of ocean acoustic data with constraint on the frequency range

Abstract

We introduce the concept of empirical mode decomposition (EMD) for the analysis of ocean acoustic data. The original EMD algorithm is modified by introducing a bandpass filter into the process to constrain the so-called intrinsic mode functions to fall within the frequency range of the input data. When applied to the impulse response of a shallow-water acoustic waveguide some of these functions are seen to be similar to predicted propagation modes
