Abstract

LE PRÉSENT ARTICLE LÈVE UN VOILE SUR UNE PARTIE DES ACTIONS DES SERVICES DE RENSEIGNEMENTS (SR) BELGES, ALLIÉS ET ALLEMANDS PENDANT L’ENTRE-DEUX-GUERRES DANS LA RÉGION D’EUPEN. L’OBJECTIF EST DE MONTRER COMMENT LES DIFFÉRENTS SERVICES DE RENSEIGNEMENTS ONT AGI SUR LE TERRAIN ET À QUEL POINT DES CIVILS DE LA RÉGION FRONTALIÈRE Y ONT PARTICIPÉ. IL EN RÉSULTE QUE CETTE ÉTUDE REFLÈTE LA POLARISATION DE LA POPULATION EUPEN-MALMÉDIENNE ENTRE LES CAMPS PRO-ALLEMAND ET PRO-BELGE DANS LES ANNÉES 30. IL EST DONC IMPORTANT DE RAPPELER D’ABORD BRIÈVEMENT LA SITUATION PARTICULIÈRE À EUPEN-MALMEDY À CETTE ÉPOQUE. APRÈS AVOIR LIVRÉ UNE VUE D’ENSEMBLE DU FONCTIONNEMENT DES DIFFÉRENTS SR À L’ŒUVRE DANS LA RÉGION FRONTALIÈRE, SERONT PRÉSENTÉS LES CAS DES RÉSEAUX GRAVITANT AUTOUR DE PETER SCHMITZ ET DE HEINRICH NIEDERAU. LE PREMIER A ÉTÉ UNE FIGURE CLÉ POUR LES SR BELGE ET ALLIÉS. LE SECOND ILLUSTRE LE TRAVAIL D’UN AGENT DE RENSEIGNEMENTS POUR LE SR BELGE. EN GUISE DE CONCLUSION, NOUS ESSAYERONS DE DRESSER UN PROFIL DES AGENTS DONT IL AURA ÉTÉ QUESTION ET DE SITUER LEUR ACTIVITÉ DANS LE CONTEXTE DU BOX, UN OFFICE DE RENSEIGNEMENTS TRIPARTITE (BELGE, FRANÇAIS ET BRITANNIQUE) MAL CONNU JUSQU’À PRÉSENT.This research article deals with a part of the Belgian, French, British and German Secret Services that acted in the area of Eupen-Malmedy in the 1930's. The aim is to show how these different entities acted and in which manner civilians were involved. After an outline of the peculiar historical context and a presentation of the different Secret Services, we focus on the interesting case studies of Peter Schmitz and Heinrich Niederau, which provide information concerning the allied Bureau of Exchange (BOX)
