The Multilayered Complexity in Alejandro Viñao's Khan Variations

Abstract

Khan Variations (2001) is one of the most challenging compositions of contemporary solo percussion repertoire. The main intention of the paper will be to provide a thorough interpretation of this particular work and to understand how each of the variations appears to be pieces of puzzles that were put together by a fascinating composer. By using Alejandro Viñao’s description, provided in his score, each variation will be analyzed focusing on its rhythmic complexity and how the whole piece is connected to Nusret Fateh Ali Khan. Since Khan Variation was written only fifteen years ago, it is the author’s intention to explore the performance practice and interpretation based on the researcher’s understanding of the piece and the interpretations of multiple outstanding professional percussionists
