Conscripting the Anzac myth to silence dissent

Abstract

Recently, the Howard Government has sought to exploit the Anzac legend to support controversial defence policy decisions. The Government has invoked this legend to present its policies as wise and just and to denigrate dissenters. According to Tony Smith some of these policies deny the democratic ideals that the originators of the legend fought to defend, and that dissenters seek to defend now
