Accelerating Profiling Services by Parallel Database Technology

Abstract

Full text information retrieval on large document management systems is increasing in popularity, as more users are gaining access to such systems especially by means of WWW interfaces. In addition, more and more systems offer a so-called profiling 1 service to keep users informed on newly published documents that match their interests. These growing volumes pose performance requirements that cannot be satisfied by traditional database technology. In this paper we want to report on how parallel database technology can contribute to overcome this problem. Our discussion is exemplified referring to an existing document management system that is currently migrated from a sequential database system to a parallel one. Both the document management system that is used in a number of different real-life applications as well as the parallel database system are developed at our university. 2 Keywords: Document Management System, Parallel Database System, Query Optimization, Profiling 1 Introd..
