Abstract

Kambera, a Malayo-Polynesian language, shows a new version of the Person CaseConstraint (PCC),disallowinganycombinationofphonologicallyweak objectsexcepttheonewheretheindirectobjectis1st/2nd person andthedirect object is 3rd person. Recent minimalist accounts fail to capture this new pattern,which,Iclaim,indicatestheexistenceofacontinuumwithintheconstraint’s typology. Inthispaper, Iamgoingtoaccountforthisnewversionas asyntacticrule-interactioneffectbetweenAgreeandscale-drivenImpoverishment.
