Front Propagation in the Pearling Instability of Tubular Vesicles

Abstract

this paper we will present a more detailed analysis addressing these and many other points. After reviewing the experimental facts in Sect. 2, we will build up a physical picture of the pearling system in Sect. 3. In particular we will show that assumption (b) above is a good approximation during the time regime of the experiment, so that pearling is essentially the invasion of a saturating front into a uniform linearly-unstable state. To get to the point as quickly as possible we will construct in Sect. 4 a very simple form of the three-fluid model which captures most of the essential physics without lengthy formulas.
