Abstract

The paragraph in section 1 is potentially rich but presently jumbled and superficial. Your job is to turn it into a solid essay. We’ll do the preliminary work in groups in class. You’ll do the actual composition at home, individually; this worksheet closes with a statement of the assignment. 1 A passionate but jumbled first attempt The First Amendment of the U. S. Constitution effectively makes campus speech codes illegal (Bronner 1997:489–490). They are also legally ineffective (Bronner 1997:494). M.I.T. instituted a speech code to help prevent sexual harassment, but the code turned out to have many unwanted consequences. Even its designers rejected it (Bronner 1997:492). One could argue that the language that speech codes seek to regulate falls outside the bounds of the First Amendment. This argument would not, though, address the fact that speech codes are an artificial tool for solving problems stemming from social inequality (Bronner 1997:492). The argument is also dubious (Bronner 1997:493)
