this paper we hope to contribute to this debate by reporting from a survey of competence management systems. The method we have used is action research that is conducted together with four industrial partners. Two of them are global firms, EHPT (former Ericsson/Hewlett-Packard Telecom) and Volvo Truck Corporation and the other are Swedish IT consultant firms, Frontec and Guide. We have investigated five systems for competence management by looking at their features and objectives. The reason for this is to identify and illuminate problem areas, both theoretical and practical, that arise when an organization is using such systems
