Management of Schema Versions and Versions of Schema Instance in a Multiversion Database

By Marie-Jo Bellosta, Robert Wrembel and Geneviève Jomier

Abstract

this paper, we propose a formal model of multiversion database systems. It is based on the database version approach [CJ90], [CJK91]. This approach constitutes the first step to the management of both schema versions and versions of schema instances. The authors introduced the database version mechanism and focused only on the versioning mechanism applied to complex objects. We extend this approach to take into account any type constructors and inheritance relationships. We propose a set of functions which constitute the kernel of the database version approach to manage both schema versions and versions of schema instances. The main advantages of this approach are extensibility and adaptability. Moreover, this model offers a rigourous framework for the development of new multiversion functionalities such as evolution support, view mechanism, query processing and integrity constraints
