Abstract

WedescriberobustnesstechniquesusedintheCommandTalksystemattherecognitionlevel,theparsinglevel,andthedialoguelevel,andhowthesewere inuencedbythelackofdomaindata.Weused interviewswithsubjectmatterexperts(SME's)to developasinglegrammarforrecognition,understanding,andgeneration,thuseliminatingtheneed forarobustparser.Webroadenedthecoverageof therecognitiongrammarbyallowingwordinsertions anddeletions,andweimplementedclaricationand correctionsubdialoguestoincreaserobustnessatthe dialoguelevel.Wediscusstheapplicabilityofthese techniquestootherdomains. 1Introduction Threetypesofrobustnessmustbeconsideredwhen designingadialoguesystem.First,thereisrobustnessattherecognitionlevel.Whenplentifuldata isavailable,arobustn-gramlanguagemodelcanb
