The document was developed at the request of the California State Department of Education Bilingual Education Office, as part of a series of handbooks for teaching language minority students. The handbook was prepared for publication with desktop publishing equipment provided under an educational grant from Apple Computer, Inc. to Folsom Cordova Unified School District. The manuscript was prepared on a Macintosh Plus, using Microsoft Word and Aldus Pagemaker, and run on a Laserwriter Plus.
