Abstract

Alberta Tucker Grimes (1909-2002) was an educator from Greenville, South Carolina and was the first black school counselor in Greenville County and later became the first full-time African-American counselor in the state. She helped establish the first Head Start Program in the state of South Carolina in Greenville County which was charted on June 15, 1965. The Head Start program she started in Greenville became the model for similar programs throughout the state. The Alberta Tucker Grimes Papers consist of original charter of the Greenville County Head Start (June 15, 1965), correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, certificates, and programs relating to Mrs. Grimes’ tenure as president of the Palmetto Education Association and founder of Greenville Project Head Start social work.https://digitalcommons.winthrop.edu/manuscriptcollection_findingaids/1410/thumbnail.jp
