A Collaborative Product Design Environment

By For Small To, Paul Cheng-hsin Liu, S. Gary Teng and Hsiao-ching Tsai

Abstract

A critical factor for competitive product design is to create a collaborative environment for product design that can be used to gather design feedback from clients and engineers at other sites, especially for small to medium size companies. Most collaborative environments can only be performed between companies with special technologies or facilities; meanwhile, small to medium size companies do not have the significant financial support to participate in such collaborations. The purpose of this paper is to establish a web-based collaborative environment in product design for small to medium size companies and their clients. This design environment forms a web-based collaboration that allows clients to modify the design as they desired and instantly feed the modifications back to the original designers through the Internet. It does not require special capital investment from the design company and its clients and can lead to reduced cycle time, lower cost, and higher quality. It also provides a better way for a design firm to exhibit its works and to communicate with its clients without missing any information
