Abstract

Symmetry Detection is a human cognitive process that is evident in various higher level processes ranging from comparison of aesthetics to problem-solving. Although most research in the area considers symmetry detection as a purely perceptual process, we also rely upon symmetry to discover new knowledge, to simplify the task at hand or to infer knowledge from other similar problems. This project aims to provide further insight on the role of symmetry detection in the discovery of logical theories. We present a computational cognitive model that is able to generalise its symmetry detection over different tasks in the domains of arithmetic, geometry and physics, demonstrating how different levels of symmetry detection may integrate to lead one to hypothesise about task properties
