POSSIBILITIES FOR EXCITATION OF NUCLEAR STATES IN AN EBIT OR EBIS

By Yaming Zou and Marrs Ross

Abstract

LLNL In spite of the very small cross sections for nuclear excitation as compared to atomic excitation, it may be possible to produce and observe nuclear transitions in an EBIT or EBIS in a few special cases. Two possibilities investigated at LLNL are the de-excitation of the 141-year 242m Am isomer with the triggered release of its energy, and the population of the 5.7-hour isomeric state in 189 Os. Electron-ion interactions, trap conditions, ion injection techniques, and detection methods required for the observation of nuclear transitions will be reviewed
