Rehabilitation robotics from past to present- a historical perspective This paper attempts to look critically at the development of the use of robotics in rehabilitation since the early 1960’s until the current day. Not only the successes but also the apparent failures will be considered. It is important that those working in this field today are aware of their heritage. By looking at the historical perspective, it is hoped to provide pointers for the way forward in this challenging and rewarding field of engineering. 1
