Bandwidth is a premium resource in ground-air and air-ground communication links. Transmission of raw Doppler weather radar data over these links incurs significant latency and high cost. Traditional image compression techniques utilizing spatial redundancy of pictorial data for reducing the bit-rate achieve at most an order-of-magnitude of compression ratios. An efficient compression scheme for reflectivity data based on contour representation of weather phenomena is presented in this paper. The method, incorporating automatic contouring, control point generation, spline-based reconstruction, and contour filling, offers compression ratios in excess of a hundred while preserving meteorologically useful features. 1
