Present web-based training systems generally offer inadequate support of course material metadata. The use of metadata for describing course material allows the material to be more easily located, and therefore be used again. To make it possible to exchange learning objects beyond system boundaries, it is necessary to use internationally accepted standards. Learning object metadata (IEEE-LOM) is an approach in this direction. The theoretical part of this thesis examines several metadata schemata. Learning object metadata is used to describe how the structure of an associative joint repository of reusable learning material might look like. The practical part deals with an actual implementation of a media library as an extension for the web-based training system GENTLE, a training system based on a Hyperwave Information Server. Beginning with a rather informal User Requirements Definition (URD), an Architectural Design (ADD) and a Detailed Design (DDD) is developed and towards the end of the work the specific implementation is discussed
