Null objects in Polish: Pronouns and determiners in Second Language Acquisition 1

By Agnieszka Kowaluk

This paper presents an SLA study of pronouns and determiners involving two groups of Polish learners of English. Despite a gradual improvement in the use of both articles and pronominal objects in English, the predicted developmental correlation between the status of determiners and pronouns in the learners ’ L2 grammar is not upheld: both groups show a delay in the development of the English articles relative to pronouns. The findings suggest that the attested development does not affect the underlying grammatical representation and could be the result of the subjects ’ exposure to more input rather than of acquiring the relevant correlation
