Knowledge state reconsideration: Hindsight belief revision

By Frances L. Johnson and Stuart C. Shapiro

Abstract

This paper presents a knowledge state formalism for a belief base that maintains information about retracted beliefs. The operation of reconsideration can, then, be performed on this knowledge state to optimize the base, dependent on the decision function governing its belief change operations. As a result of reconsideration, beliefs retracted earlier might be recovered, and some current beliefs might be retracted. Contraction is also divided into three separate types, thus eliminating the effect of the order of the belief change operations prior to reconsideration
