INVITED LECTURES Abduction in Labelled Deductive Systems A Conceptual Abstract

By D M Gabbay

Abstract

A Theory of Abduction and Induction is outlined within the framework of Labelled Deductive Systems (LD5). It is argued that abductive principles are dependent on the computation procedures and are to be considered as items of data in the database. 1 Intuitive Theory of Labelled Abduction This section will introduce our intuitive theory of abduction within the framework of Labelled Deductive Systems. We shall answer the following questions: 9 what is a database 9 what is a query system 9 what is abduction and give some simple examples. The new ideas we shall put forward are: 9 abduction depends on proof procedures 9 abductive principles can be part of the data. In other words, a declarative item of data can be either a formula or a prioc~le of abduction The more precise machinery for these concepts will be developed in later sections. This section will discuss the intuitiv
