Performing Morality: A Study of Alcoholics Anonymous

Abstract

The author aims to generously and honestly present Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as a moral practice while demonstrating how AA’s divergence from scientific practice accounts for much of its success. AA is best viewed as a fringe quasi-religious movement and, at worst, as a cult of some sort. Methodology includes an examination of bibliographic research and published accounts of the significance of AA as a cultural and historical product. The author researches Ernest Kurtz' Not God: A History of Alcoholics Anonymous
