Indigenous, Non-Indian Residents and Municipal Councils : Thnicity and Land Conflicts in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo (XVIII and XIX centuries)

Abstract

This paper analyzes the processes of extinction of indigenous collective lands and villages in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, from mid-eighteenth century to the nineteenth century, giving emphasis on the role of IndigenousÆs policy aiming to delay the process. Based on the correspondence among authorities, laws, statistical reports, and petitions from the Indians themselves, we approach the agrarian conflicts among indigenous, non-Indian residents and municipal councils, focusing on the issue of controversies and discussions regarding ethnicity that played a central role in these disputes.O artigo analisa os processos de extinção das aldeias e terras coletivas indígenas no Rio de Janeiro e no Espírito Santo, de meados do século XVIII ao XIX, com ênfase na atuação política dos índios no sentido de retardá-los. Com base na correspondência entre autoridades, leis, mapas estatísticos e petições dos próprios índios, são abordados os conflitos agrários entre índios, moradores e câmaras municipais, enfocando-se a problemática das controvérsias e discussões sobre etnicidade que tiveram papel central nessas disputas
