Folkeafstemninger - Vejen til et legitimt EU

By Line Andersen, Ask H. Krogh, Jens A. Andersen, Morten Harboe and Camilla L. Christensen

Abstract

Abstract: Based on David Beetham and Christopher Lord’s Legitimacy and the European Union, an analysis of how the Danish perception of the legitimacy of the European Union (EU) as a political system is affected by the use of popular referenda on the EU issue, is conducted. Inspired by critical realism and Max Weber’s ideal types, the possible causal connections between the underlying mechanisms affected by the use referenda, are discussed. Finally, it is concluded that referenda only in the short term can constitute a significant variable in reference to the Danish perception of the EU as legitimate
