Design and production of a 28 footer sport trimaran.

By Ronan Patrix

Abstract

The following project is based on the design and the production of a sport trimaran. This choice was driven by the increasing popularity of the multihull in the sailing world brought by the racing event (Route du Rhum, Trophée Jules Verne, Extreme 40, and lately, America’s Cup) and by the author personal interest in the challenge of designing a boat that can combine high performances and sufficient\ud accommodations for a week coastal cruise.\ud The design limitations were selected as follow: can tow behind a car and setup by the crew without external help, should stay in the current market prices. Two versions were to be designed: Fun & Extreme, the Fun was used as a base design to develop this project around.\ud The end result is a 9 metres overall trimaran, using 8 metres hulls with staggered floats. The folding capacity proved to be compulsory in a cruising version during the\ud design process was developed to shift from 6.87 metres beam overall to 3.1 metres. Designed under ISO RCD requirement for categories C, this trimaran could be easily upgraded to cat. B, for the sake of this project, cat. C was kept for the final design
