ASSESSMENT OF THE GEOMECHANICAL BEHAVIOR AND THE INSTABILITY PHENOMENA THE CASEOF FLYSCH FORMATIONS OF WESTERN GREECE

By ΣΤΥΛΙΑΝΟΣ ΣΚΙΑΣ

Abstract

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE THESIS IS THE RATIONAL AND ASSESSMENT OF THE EXTREMELY VARYING MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF FLYSCH ROCK MASS, AS A RESULT OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN ITS INHERENT CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES AND THE EXISTING COMBINATION OF NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC FACTORS OF INFLUENCE.THE STRUCTURALLY COMPLEX FLYSCH MASS IS TRETED AS AN ENGINEERING GEOLOGICAL SYSTEM, CONSITING OF ALTERNATIONS OF HARD (SANDSTONE-CONGLOMERATE LITHOFACIES) AND SOFT ( CLAY - SILT LITHOFACIES) MEMBER - LAYERS. THE MECHANICAL DEGRADATION OF THE SYSTEM IS CONTROLLED BY THE PRESENCE OF THE CLAY-SILT LITHOFACIES WHICH EXHIBITS AN ENGINEERING-TIME RELATED DEGRADATIONAL BEHAVIOR.THE COMPOSITION OF THE CLASTIC AND CEMENTING MATERIAL OF THE CLAY-SILT LITHOFACIES AND THE RELATIVE POSITION OF ITS LAYERS WITHIN THE SYSTEM, COMBINED WITH THE WATER PRESENCE, GREATLY DETERMINE THE TYPE AND THE SPATIAL-TEMPORAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE INSTABILITY PHENOMENA ENCOUNTERED IN FLYSCH FORMATIONS. THE MECHANICAL STRENGTH OF CLAY - SILT FACIES, IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO ITS WATER CONTENT AND ITS DEGRADATIONAL RATE DEPENDS ON THE VALUE OF SLAKE DURABILITY INDEX. IT IS ARGUED THATINTERACTION MATRICES REPRESENT AN OPTIMAL METHODOLOGICAL DEVICE FOR THE NATIONAL COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF BOTH ROCK MASS QUALITY AND ROCK MASS INSTABILITY POTENTIAL OF THE COMPLEX FLYSCH FORMATIONS. THE NATURAL REFERENCE PLACEOF THE INVESTIGATED FLYSCH ROCK MASS ARE THE GEOGRAPHICAL FLYSCH REGIONS REGIONS BELONGING TO IONIAN AND GAVRONO GEOTECTONIC ZONES, IN WESTERN ABSTRACTTRUNCATED
