Abstract

IN THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION 31 OVARIAN CYCLES HAVE BEEN STUDIED BY SIMULTANEOUS TAKING AND EXAMINATION OF BOTH, VAGINAL AS WELL AS URINARY SEDIMENT SMEARS, OF 10 WOMEN. THE COMPARATIVE STUDY OF VAGINAL AND URINARY SMEARS HAS SHOWN THE FOLLOWING: 1. THE UROCYTOGRAMME PRESENTS DURING THE OVARIAN CYCLE THE SAME CHANGES AS THE VAGINAL CYTOGRAMME AND CONSEQUENTLY IT CAN SUBSTITUTE THE LATTER, PROVIDED THAT THE TAKING AND THE EXAMINATION OF URINE WILL BE DONE PROPERLY. 2. THE SIGNS OF CHANGE OF ESTROGENIC ACTIVITY (EOSINOPHILIC AND CARYOPYCNOTIC INDEX) SUSTAIN PARALLEL CHANGES IN BOTH METHODS SO THAT THE NOTICED LOWER LEVEL OF THE INDEXES OF THE UROCYTOGRAMME SHOULD NOT BE CONSIDERED AS A DISADVANTAGE. MOREOVER, THE PEAK OF THE CURVES OF THE INDEXES (WHICH DESIGNS THE OVULATION) PRECEDED ON THOSE OF THE UROCYTOGRAMME NEARLY-BY THE 1/3 OF THE DAY.3. THE SIGNS OF CHANGES OF PROGESTATIONAL AVTIVITY (SHRINKAGE OF THE CYTOPLASME AND CREATION OF CELLULAR PILES) ARE LESS PROMINENT ON THE URINARY SMEARS THAN ON THE VAGINAL ONES. THAT WAS NOT A SERIOUS DISADVANTAGE FOR THE DETERMINATION OF THE DEGREE OF THE PROGESTATIONAL ACTIVITY. 4. A HIGH DEGREE OF LEUCOCYTOSIS IS OBSERVED IN THE VAGINAL SMEARS ESPECIALLY DURING THE LUTEAL PHASE.ON THE CONTRARY, IN THE URINARY SMEARS NO LEUCOCYTOSIS HAS BEEN OBSERVED DURINGTHE WHOLE CYCLE, OR (ABSTRACT TRUNCATED)
