CONTRIBUTION OF HEPATIC PORTOENTEROSTOMY IN THE TREATMENT OF BILIARY ATRESIA

Abstract

THE HEPATIC PORTOENTEROSTOMY CHANGED THE PROGNOSIS OF BILIARY ATRESIA. THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY IS TO ASSESS THE EFFICACY OF HEPATIC PORTOENTEROSTOMY IN TREATING 15 INFANTS WITH BILIARY ATRESIA. ALSO THE INTENTION IS TO INVESTIGATE ALL THOSE FACTORS THAT CORRELATE WITH BEST OUTCOME OF THE DISEASE. AMONG THESE CHILDREN 8 ARE STILL ALIVE (FOLLOW-UP 2-5 1/2 YEARS) AND THE OTHER 7 HAVE DIED.THREE CHILDREN ARE CANDIDATES FOR LIVER TRANSPLANTATION. CHOLANGITIS IS THE MAJOR POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATION THAT CORRELATE WITH PROGNOSIS. THE DIAGNOSIS AND SURGICAL RECONSTRUCTION IN TIME AT BILIARY ATRESIA WITH SURVIVAL TO 1/3 OF CHILDREN AND MAILY OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO UNDERGO LIVER TRANSPLANTATION IN THE FUTURE THESE CHILDREN WITH HEPATIC FAILURE.
