CONSTRUCTION AND DEFINITION OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF NEW COΜPOSITE MATERIALS "ARALL" TYPE

Abstract

ARALL TYPE SANDWICH MATERIALS HAVE THE CHALLENGE TO REPLACE CONSERVATIVE ALUMINUM ALLOYS IN AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES. IN ORDER TO DEFINE THE PARAMETERS AFFECTINGTHEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES, A LARGE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SANDWICH SPECIMENS WERE CONSTRUCTED. DIFFERENT MECHANICAL TREATMENTS WERE ALSO APPLIED ON ALUMINUM SURFACES IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE BEST ADHESION PROCEDURE. MOREOVER, BENDING,TENSILE AND FRACTURE TESTS WERE APPLIED ON THESE SPECIMENS. CONCERNING THE THEORETICAL PART, A MODEL PREDICTING THE FLEXURAL MODULUS AND AGREEMENT WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL ONES. MOREOVER, ANOTHER MODEL DEFINING THE STRESSES ALONG EACH LAMINA, IN TENSILE LOADS, WAS DEVELOPED. FINALLY, IN ORDER TO CALCULATE GIC-VALUES, TWO THEORETICAL MODELS WERE DEVELOPED, INCLUDING THE CASE OF NON-LINEAR ATTITUDE. THE RESULTS WERE IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH THE ONES PREDICTED BY MORE COMPLICATED AND DIFFICULT TO HANDLE MODELS.
