PRE-MOVEMENT CORTICAL POTENTIALS PRECEDING HORIZONTAL SACCADIC EYE MOVEMENTS

By ΔΗΜΗΤΡΙΟΣ ΛΙΑΚΟΠΟΥΛΟΣ

Abstract

CORTICAL POTENTIALS PRECEDING SACCADIC EYE MOVEMENTS TO VISUAL TARGETS WERE RECORDED FROM 50 HEALTHY SUBJECTS. THE DATA ANALYSIS REVEALED THE FOLLOWING FINDINGS: CORTICAL POTENTIALS WITH THREE WELL DEFINED DIFFERENT PARTS WERE RECORDED PRIOR TO SACCADES FROM ALL EEG LEADS. THESE PARTS ARE: 1. THE SPINE POTENTIAL.2. THE PRE-MOTOR POSITIVITY. 3. THE BEREITSCHAFT POTENTIAL. THE BEREITSCHAFT POTENTIAL PRIOR TO CENTRIFUGAL SACCADES HAS TWO COMPONENTS WITH DIFFERENT GRADIENTS AND STARTS ABOUT 1000 MSEC PRIOR TO THE MOVEMENT. PRIOR TO CENTRIPETAL SACCADES THIS POTENTIAL IS A ONE COMPONENT WAVE STARTING ABOUT 600 MSEC PRIOR TO THE EYE MOVEMENT ONSET. A CLEAR LATERALIZATION OF THE PRE-MOVEMENT POTENTIAL WAS FOUND, MORE PRONOUNCED AT THE CONTRALATERAL TO THE EYE MOVEMENT DIRECTION LATERAL FRONTAL LEADS. A SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION OF THE POTENTIAL AMPLITUDE PRECEDING THE LAST TEN, COMPARED TO THAT OF THE FIRST TEN EYE MOVEMENTS OF THE RECORDING PERIOD WAS NOTICED IN ALL SUBJECTS.
