IRON CONCENTRATION IN THE HAIR OF B-THALASSEMIC PATIENTS

By ΟΥΡΑΝΙΑ ΠΑΠΑΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΥ-ΓΩΓΟΥ

Abstract

IRON CONCENTRATION IN HAIR WAS DETECTED BY THE METHOD OF ATOMIC ABSORPTION SPECTROPHOTOMETRY. THE FINDINGS DEMONSTRATED THAT HAIR IRON CONCENTRATION IN B-THALASSEMIC PATIENTS IS FIVE-FOLD GREATER IN THE HAIR OF HEALTHY SUBJECTS. MEAN HAIR IRON CONCENTRATION IN PATIENTS: 11, 19+-7,84 MG/G. MEAN HAIR IRON CONCENTRATION IN HEALTHY INDIVIDUALS: 2,25+-1,62MG/G (P< =0.0005). A HIGH POSITIVE CORRELATION WAS OBSERVED BETWEEN THE LEVELS OF SERUM FERRITIN AND THE HAIR IRON CONCENTRATION IN THALASSEMIC PATIENTS, ESPECIALLY IN PATIENTS WITH NORMAL HEPATIC FUNCTION AND NEGATIVE ANTI-HCV ANTIBODIES (R2=0.712, P<0.0001) WHEREAS NO CORRELATION WAS OBSERVED BETWEEN THE ABOVE MEASUREMENTS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HEPATITIES C. (R2 =0,065, P>0,25). A NEGATIVE CORRELATION WAS FOUNDBETWEEN HAIR IRON CONCENTRATION AND THE DEFEROXAMINE DOSE GIVEN TO THE PATIENTS. IT APPEARS THAT HAIR IRON CONCENTRATION IS ASSOSIATED WITH THE IRON DEPOSITION IN THE VARIOUS TISSUES OF THE BODY.
