A TRANSITION RADIATION TRACKER FOR THE ATLAS EXPERIMENT AT THE LHC/CERN

Abstract

A TRASITION RADIATION TRACKER (TRT) HAS BEEN PROPOSED AS PART OF THE INNER DETECTOR OF THE ATLAS EXPERIMENT AT THE LHC AT CERN. THIS DEVICE WILL PROVIDE EFFICIENT TRACKING AND PATTERN RECOGNITION AT THE HIGHEST LHC OCCUPANCIES, BY TAKING A LARGE NUMBER OF MEASUREMENTS ON THE PARTICLE TRACKS, AND PARTICLE IDENTIFICATION, USING THE PHENOMENON OF TRANSITION RADIATION. THESE FEATURES ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE IDENTIFICATION OF VARIOUS HIGGS DECAYS, B AND TOP PHYSICS ETC. IN THIS THESIS, I DEMONSTRATE THE NECESSITY FOR SUCH A DETECTOR FOR THE PHYSICS GOALS OF ATLAS AND ANALYZE ITS PERFORMANCE IN THE INNER DETECTOR ENVIRONMENT, BASED ON SIMULATION STUDIES AND TEST BEAM MEASUREMENTS WITH A PROTOTYPE DETECTOR.
