ANALYSIS OF THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF MICROBIAL COMPETITION IN BIOREACTOR �SYSTEMS

Abstract

THE OBJECTIVE OF THIS WORK IS THE STUDY OF MICROBIAL COMPETITION BETWEEN TWO OR THREE MICROORGANISMS IN PERIODICALLY OPERATED BIOREACTORS AS WELL AS OF TWO MICROORGANISMS IN A SYSTEM OF TWO INTERCONNECTED BIOREACTORS. THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF THESE SYSTEMS HAS BEEN STUDIED NUMERICALLY BY THE METHOD OF SOLUTION CONTINUATION OF THE DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS DESCRIBING THESE SYSTEMS. ITWAS SHOWN THAT THE PERIODIC OPERATION MAKES POSSIBLE THE COEXISTENCE OF MICROORGANISMS, WHICH CAN BE PERIODIC, QUASIPERIODIC OR CHAOTIC, AND THE CORRESPONDING VALUES OF OPERATING PARAMETERS HAVE BEEN DETERMINED. IN THE SYSTEM OF TWO INTERCONNECTED BIOREACTORS IT WAS SHOWN THAT THE COEXISTENCE OF TWO MICROORGANISMS CAN BE PERIODIC, ALTHOUGH NONE OF EACH OF THE REACTORS ALONE HAS SUCH A BEHAVIOR.
