By ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ ΜΠΑΣΛΗΣ

Abstract

THE AIM OF THIS RESEARCH IS TO INVESTIGATE THE SOCIOLINGUISTIC SITUATION IN THE GREEK SCHOOL AFTER THE INTRODUCTION OF "DIMOTIKI" (ACT 309/76) AS THE LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION AT ALL LEVELS OF EDUCATION AND ALSO THE IMPLICATIONS OF THISSOCIOLINGUISTIC SITUATION UPON THE EDUCATIONAL CAREER OF THE STUDENTS. FOR THIS PURPOSE SAMPLES OF WRITTEN AND ORAL LANGUAGE OF 60 GREEK SCHOOL CHILDREN (AGE 6 AND 12) FROM THE MIDDLE CLASS, WORKING CLASS AND REGIONAL AREAS WERE ANALYSED, USING SIMILAR STUDIES CARRIED OUT BY B. BERNSTEIN, D. LAWTON AND G. TURNER AS A MODEL. THE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF THE MEASURES OF THE LINGUISTIC SAMPLES OF THE GREEK LANGUAGE SHOWED LINGUISTIC DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE LANGUAGE OF MIDDLE CLASS, WORKING CLASS AND REGIONAL AREAS SCHOOL CHILDREN AND BERNSTEIN'S CONCEPT OF "RESTRICTED" AND "ELABORATED CODE" CAN BE APPLIED TO THE GREEK LANGUAGE.
