THE INHERITANCE OF SOME QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERS IN NINE GREEK VARIETIES IN BREAD WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.EM.THELL)

Abstract

NINE GREEK VARIETIES OF BREAD WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L. EM. THELL) WERE CROSSED IN A DIALLEL FASHION. THE PARENTS AND THE 36 F1 AND 36 F2 POPULATIONS WEREGROWN AT TWO CONTRASTING LOCATION FOR TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS IN A RANDOMIZED COMPLETE BLOCK DESIGN. THE IMPORTANCE OF ADDITIVE AND DOMINANCE EFFECT ON YIELD, COMPONENTS OF YIELD AND SEVERAL RELATED AGRONOMIC CHARACTERS WERE INVESTIGATED. FOR ALL CHARACTERS INHERITANCE COEFFICIENT WERE ESTIMATED AND DOMINANCE EFFECTS WERE INVESTIGATED. ADDITIVE AND DOMINANT GENETIC EFFECTS WERE OF CONSIDERABLE IMPORTANCE IN CONTROLLING THE PHENOTYPIC EXPRESSION OF ALL CHARACTERS. ADDITIVE GENETIC EFFECTS WERE MORE IMPORTANT IN THE PHENOTYPIC EXPRESSION FOR NUMBER OF TILLERS AND NUMBER OF FERTILE TILLERS PER PLANT, WHILE FOR THE OTHERCHARACTERS MORE IMPORTANT WERE THE DOMINANT GENETIC EFFECTS. INHERITANCE COEFFICIENT WAS HIGH FOR NUMBER OF TILLERS PER PLANT, WIDTH OF FLAG LEAF HEADING DATE AND DAYS TO FLOWERING. THE CULTIVARS USED IN THE PRESENT INVESTIGATION REPRESENT A VERY PROMISING GERM PLASM FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF BREAD WHEAT IN GREECE.
