Abstract
The use of a receiver-integrated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) for gain transient suppression in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networks is proposed and experimentally studied. The effectiveness of SOA transient suppression is investigated as a function of the optical input power into the SOA for a 10 Gbit/s channel disturbed by power transients. Near-perfect correction of a 2.3 dB transient power penalty for transmission over a 25 km standard singlemode fibre link is demonstrated by using an SOA with a holding beam
