Thermal monitoring and modelling of eletrical machine – A review

The temperature of an electrical machine can affect its performance and lifespan, as high temperatures can lead to thermal stress, material degradation, and reduced efficiency. Therefore, thermal monitoring and modelling of electrical machines are crucial for ensuring their optimal operation and maintenance. This paper provides overview of the recent studies and developments in these two areas, highlighting their advantages, challenges, and applications. Focuses on two aspects of thermal management in electrical machines: monitoring temperature response and modelling temperature response. The paper also identifies some future research directions and opportunities for improving thermal management in electrical machines

CFD analysis of natural convection on the outer surface of the containment of APWR Model

To improve the safety of nuclear power plants, a modern NPP such as Advance Pressurize Water Reactor (APWR) is equipped with a safety feature called PCCS (Passive Containment Cooling System), where naturally circulating air cools the outer surface of the containment which is used to remove decay heat released inside the containment vessel. The decay heat from the reactor core will be transferred out through the conduction mechanism and the natural convection mechanism on the outer surface of the containment vessel. Then, the hot air that forms in the gap between the containment and its baffles will rose through the chimney located at the top of the concrete building and cold air will enter through the inlet to create a natural circulation cycle. To obtain the effectiveness of the use of baffles, as a comparison, it is necessary to analyze the natural convection heat transfer on the outer surface of a containment vessel that is not equipped with a baffle. In this research, CFD analysis of natural convection on the outer surface of the containment of APWR reactor model has been done. Based on the model developed, the analysis was done to get temperature and convection heat transfer coefficient in the air flow on the containment surface. Heat flux in the containment surface varied from 500 W/m2 to 2.000 W/m2 with an increase of 500 W/m2 intervals. Based on the analysis results, the correlation equations are also proposed in this paper, namely the correlation of natural convection heat transfer for laminar regime on a vertical cylindrical with the heat flux constant in the form Nuq = a(Raq)b

Record dengue deaths in Bangladesh as disease patterns change

The worst dengue outbreak to ever strike Bangladesh was in 2023, caused by the DENV-2 strain. The Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) estimated case fatality rate of 0.53 % in 2023 based on a total of 32,1179 laboratory-confirmed cases and 17,05 associated fatalities. The outbreak has spread to all eight divisions of the nation and displayed unique seasonality as well as an early, dramatic rise in case count, peaking in late June. Along with regional diversity in the epidemic loads, the outbreak has also shown differences in morbidity and death associated with age and gender. The government has stepped up its anti-dengue campaign in response to the crisis, including initiatives to increase public awareness and manage the mosquito population

Are we eating plastic? Science mapping of microplastic pollution in the aquatic food chain

This study evaluates the knowledge structure of microplastic pollution and its effects on the aquatic food chain. The presence of microplastics has seriously harmed the ecosystem. Through bibliometric analysis, 216 journal publications were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) from 2008 to 2023 (April), with no restriction in the time frame. Applying bibliographic coupling and co-word analysis, the emerging, current, and future themes of microplastic pollution are presented. Three research streams are derived from bibliographic coupling, centralized on the source of microplastic pollution and its impact. At the same time, research streams from co-word analysis are associated with overcoming the issue of microplastics in the ecosystem. This study's implications suggest three main principles to mitigate microplastic issues: (1) educating the public on the impact of microplastic pollution, (2) implementing holistic regulations and policies, and (3) developing treatment strategies through conventional, innovative, and hybrid approaches. Microplastic pollution is a global concern, requiring a holistic and comprehensive approach to overcome it. This review is the first to present a scientific mapping of the microplastics literature, which is a fundamental basis for future research on microplastic pollution and its impact on the ecosystem

Post-COVID-19 Malaysian parents’ views on children’s vaccination: Subjective norms analysis

Vaccinating children is a critical life-saving measure that ensures herd immunity and saves numerous lives. However, the rising trend of parental refusal to vaccinate poses a significant threat to disease containment within societies. Amid the widespread COVID-19 pandemic in Malaysia, this study examines how subjective standards impact parents’ vaccination intentions and behaviors. Lockdowns and travel restrictions during the pandemic caused a decline in vaccination rates due to missed appointments for children’s vaccinations. Even post-pandemic, some parents persist in refusing vaccination for their children. Conducting an online survey and employing quantitative, the study collected data from parents with children aged 1 day to 15 years old. Analyzing the data through IBM SPSS and employing SmartPLS 4.0.9.5 software, specifically using partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM), revealed significant insights. The findings indicate that parents’ willingness to vaccinate their children significantly predicts their actual vaccination behavior. Moreover, social norms positively influence parental vaccination intentions. The study highlights the mediating role of vaccination intention between social norms and actual vaccination behavior among parents. Overall, this empirical research strongly supports the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model, emphasizing the importance of targeting social norms to foster vaccination behavior and elevate vaccination rates

Probiotic growth pattern and physicochemical evaluation of water kefir fermentation

Probiotics are live-friendly microorganisms that can confer a health benefit on the host if it is consumed in sufficient amounts. Water kefir is a probiotic-rich fermented beverage that contains multi-species of live cultures. Brown sugar and palm sugar were used for water kefir fermentation due to their high sucrose and mineral contents. The objective of this study was to determine the probiotic growth pattern of water kefir and to evaluate the physicochemical parameters, including the pH changes, lactic acid content, reducing sugar content, and total soluble solids. The fermented water kefir was collected at every 6-hour interval, until the end of 72 hours of fermentation. The growth curve was determined by enumerated probiotics on De Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) agar, Yeast Extract-Peptone-Dextrose (YPD) agar, and Gluconobacter (GM) agar plates, respectively. MRS, YPD, and GM agar plates were used to enumerate lactic acid bacteria, yeast, and acetic acid bacteria, respectively. The result showed increased probiotic growth as fermentation time increased with different phases observed from the growth curve. The stationary phase of probiotics was recorded at 30-42 h and was recommended as the optimal harvesting point. Besides, longer fermentation time produced lower pH values and lower total soluble solids while higher lactic acid and higher reducing sugars. At the end of fermentation, the concentration of lactic acid and reducing sugars were 2.16 ± 0.09 g/L and 13.66 ± 0.14 mg/mL, respectively. In conclusion, probiotics from water kefir fermentation are suggested to be best harvested between 30-42 hours and can be used for self-consume or downstream processing
