Negotiating fit into host country work settings: Understanding the interplay between the past and the present in the accounts of skilled refugees
How do marginalised cultural outsiders negotiate fit into new work settings? I draw on a discursive (re)positioning lens to examine qualitative interview accounts of a group of skilled refugees in Britain and provide insights into three temporal moves they make to portray themselves as unconstrained by a lack of host country cultural know-how, able to swiftly address gaps in knowledge and skills, and able to blend in. I theorise newcomer self-socialisation as a temporal (re)positioning dynamic that involves retrospectively defining oneself as a particular kind of person who has the potential to fit. I argue that temporal (re)positioning enables newcomers to maintain worth, secure external validation and impact on their contexts. I propose that the simultaneous foregrounding and minimising of the past is an important mechanism for skilled refugees to negotiate an ambivalent sense of fit into new work settings
Financial development and tax evasion: International evidence from OECD and non-OECD countries
This study investigates the nexus between financial development and tax evasion across 156 countries from 2000 to 2017. In contrast to previous research focusing solely on banks or financial markets’ development, we employ a more comprehensive financial development index introduced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in 2016. This index gauges the progress of financial institutions (FI) and financial markets (FM) in terms of depth, access, and efficiency. Our findings underscore a negative correlation between financial development and tax evasion. Enhanced depth, access, and efficiency in both FI and FM correspond to reduced levels of tax evasion. Nevertheless, disparities emerge between the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and non-OECD countries. While non-OECD countries exhibit negative associations between FI and FM development and tax evasion, in OECD countries, the role of FI assumes greater significance in curtailing tax evasion. Internment, Immersive Technology and Historical Empathy: Natal’s Fort Napier Camp (1914-1919) as a Virtual Reality Experience
The article presents a new way of reconstructing and representing the history of internment. It provides a critical academic framework for the authors’ virtual reality experience (VRE) Interned. Fort Napier Camp in South Africa held 2,500 civilians, mostly German ‘enemy aliens’, during the First World War. The VRE gives users an immersive experience of the camp and was produced through rigorous cross-sector collaboration between academia and industry. Based on user feedback, we argue that the empathy-related opportunities of VR create novel gateways to understanding experiences of minorities in wartime. Revisiting Mobile Payment Risk-Reduction Strategies: A Cross-Country Analysis
Mobile payment risk has become a critical cybersecurity factor in the cashless society. The outbreak of COVID-19 helped proliferate mobile payments that also bring significant risks to users. Using AI methods, this study analyzed six dimensions of mobile payment risks (financial, privacy, performance, psychology, time, and security) in a survey of 748 respondents from three countries (UK, Taiwan, and Mozambique). The decision tree method was employed to identify and analyze critical perceived risks. The ANOVA test provided insights on the perceived risks between countries. The ANOVA test showed that UK users were concerned about financial and time risks; those in Mozambique were concerned about performance, psychological, and security risks; and those in Taiwan were concerned about privacy risks. The results revealed that decision trees outperformed other methods (such as neural networks, logistic regression, support vector machine (SVM), random forest, and Naïve Bayes models). Performance risk (Taiwan and Mozambique) and security risk (UK) are the most significant factors. Cultural differences influence mobile payment risk perception in different countries. The risk-reduction strategies were also matched to the critical factors by the decision tree. This showed that simplification and risk-sharing strategies were the major tactics in all three countries. The clarification strategy works for Taiwan and Mozambique, which focuses on the benefits of using mobile payments. The results suggest that enterprises should improve and simplify the mobile payment process and collaborate with the third parties to reduce and share cybersecurity risk
Visible Light-Driven Organic Pollutant Removal Using Fe-Based Photocatalysts Supported by Wheat Straw Biochar
Researchers are actively pursuing the development of highly functional photocatalyst materials using environmentally friendly and sustainable resources. In this study, wheat straw biochar (BC), a by-product of biomass pyrolysis, was explored as a green, porous substrate and a carbon-based sensitizer to activate Fe-based photocatalysts under visible light. The research also delved into the impact of doping copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn) to enhance the photocatalytic activity of BC-Fe-based catalysts for the removal of methylene orange (MO) from water. Characterization results revealed a more than twofold increase in surface area and greater porosity, contributing to improved radical generation. BC demonstrated its dual functionality as a high surface area substrate and an electron sink, facilitating multistep electron movement and enhancing the photoactivity of the composite catalyst. Photodegradation experiments indicated that the combination of BC with Fe and Zn exhibited the highest performance, removing over 80% of MO within 120 min. Parametric studies highlighted the preference for an alkali pH, and the photocatalyst demonstrated efficient performance up to 30 ppm of dye. Radical scavenging experiments identified •OH and h+ as the most generated radicals. This study establishes that the green and sustainable BC holds promise as a material in the quest for more sustainable photocatalysts
Core Outcome Set for IgE ‐mediated food allergy clinical trials and observational studies of interventions: International Delphi consensus study ‘ COMFA ’
Background: IgE‐mediated food allergy (FA) is a global health concern with substantial individual and societal implications. While diverse intervention strategies have been researched, inconsistencies in reported outcomes limit evaluations of FA treatments. To streamline evaluations and promote consistent reporting, the Core Outcome Measures for Food Allergy (COMFA) initiative aimed to establish a Core Outcome Set (COS) for FA clinical trials and observational studies of interventions. Methods: The project involved a review of published clinical trials, trial protocols and qualitative literature. Outcomes found as a result of review were categorized and classified, informing a two‐round online‐modified Delphi process followed by hybrid consensus meeting to finalize the COS. Results: The literature review, taxonomy mapping and iterative discussions with diverse COMFA group yielded an initial list of 39 outcomes. The iterative online and in‐person meetings reduced the list to 13 outcomes for voting in the formal Delphi process. One more outcome was added based on participant suggestions after the first Delphi round. A total of 778 participants from 52 countries participated, with 442 participating in both Delphi rounds. No outcome met a priori criteria for inclusion, and one was excluded as a result of the Delphi. Thirteen outcomes were brought to the hybrid consensus meeting as a result of Delphi and two outcomes, ‘allergic symptoms’ and ‘quality of life’ achieved consensus for inclusion as ‘core’ outcomes. Conclusion: In addition to the mandatory reporting of adverse events for FA clinical trials or observational studies of interventions, allergic symptoms and quality of life should be measured as core outcomes. Future work by COMFA will define how best to measure these core outcomes
Experiential Learning for Circular Operations Management in Higher Education
This research-to-practice article delves into novel learning experiences for operations management education, involving the circular economy and experiential learning. Higher Education academics are required to develop effective learning that actively and impactfully helps nurture in students the essential competency to face sustainable development demands. In operations management education, one possibility is to integrate real-world circular economy challenges into learning activities that address issues concerning solid waste generation in business processes and operations. This type of innovative learning experience involves both conceptual understanding and practical implementation. Accordingly, experiential learning is considered a suitable pedagogy for this purpose in this work because of its hands-on applications, critical thinking, and active engagement. To illustrate this proposition, this paper presents a case study concerning an operations management undergraduate course at a Mexican university. The case study indicates how to translate a situation of solid waste generation in a business into relevant disciplinary experiential learning. The results show that students regarded the learning experience as motivating, interesting, and relevant while widely accomplishing their learning objectives. However, limitations did exist regarding experiential learning, the methodological approach, data collection, and implementation challenges. Future work points to the need for further learning experiences and to improve research reliability, transferability, and validity
'The burden is very much on yourself': A qualitative study to understand the illness and treatment burden of hearing loss across the life course
INTRODUCTION: Hearing loss is a chronic health condition that rises sharply with age. The way people respond to and cope with health conditions is influenced by their capacity to perform illness and treatment-related work. The aim was to explore the cumulative burdens of living with hearing loss and the resources mobilised to ease the burdens. METHODS: A qualitative design was used with semi-structured interviews (online or in-person) with participants recruited through audiology services and nonclinical services, such as lip-reading classes. Forty-six participants with hearing loss aged between 16 and 96 years were interviewed. An abductive approach, informed by May et al.'s burden of treatment theory, was used to analyse the data. RESULTS: The illness burden involved participants working to make sense of their hearing loss, engaging in emotional work in response to changes in sound, social interactions and identity and coping with the daily frustrations required to communicate with others. Abandonment and uncertainty characterised the treatment burden; participants engaged in emotional work to adjust to hearing technology and deal with the uncertainty of how their hearing might progress. To ameliorate the burdens, participants drew on internal resources (psychological, health literacy, cognitive) and external resources (social support, financial, information, technology). CONCLUSIONS: The workload of hearing loss appears largely devolved to the patient and is not always visible. Our work indicates the need to widen approaches in audiological care through the implementation of lifeworld-led care, family-centred care and peer support to build support for those with hearing loss. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: We developed the project in consultation with members of the public who have lived experience of hearing loss recruited through Aston University and volunteer links to audiology services. We also consulted people more likely to be affected by hearing loss adults including adults with learning disabilities, older adults in residential care and people from South Asia (Bangladeshi, Indian and Pakistani communities). These individuals commented on the study aims, interview schedule and participant recruitment practices. One of our co-authors (expert by experience) contributed to the development and interpretation of themes and preparation of the final manuscript
Stakeholder experiences of deprescribing psychotropic medicines for challenging behaviour in people with intellectual disabilities
Purpose: Evidence of overprescribing of psychotropic medicines to manage challenging behaviour in people with intellectual disabilities has led to national programmes within the UK to promote deprescribing, such as stopping the overprescribing of medication in people (with learning disabilities, autism or both). To successfully implement deprescribing initiatives, we need to understand how to engage stakeholders in the process. Design/methodology/approach: In a published systematic review, we reported evidence about the process of deprescribing psychotropic medicines for people of all ages with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour. As a part of the original review, we searched for evidence about stakeholders’ experiences of the psychotropic deprescribing process, which was synthesised and reported within the current study. Findings: Six studies were identified. Involving carers and people with intellectual disabilities, providing ongoing support and improving access to non-pharmacological interventions, including positive behaviour support, may contribute to successful outcomes, including reducing or stopping psychotropic medicines and improving quality of life. Implementing psychotropic deprescribing requires a multidisciplinary collaborative care approach and education for stakeholders. Originality/value: There have been no previous reviews of stakeholder experiences of deprescribing psychotropic medications for people with intellectual disabilities and challenging behaviour. The existing literature is scant, and further research is needed
Expertise as Perspectives in Dialogue
In this chapter we examine the notion of expertise by experience, with reference to mental health research, discussing some of the objections commonly raised against its legitimacy. Expertise is built upon knowledge or experience, but it arises from extensive efforts in seeking to understand something. We start by observing how the capacity for providing expert insight can be facilitated, by choosing to create environments and relationships in which different perspectives are heard and understood. We argue that the best way to characterise the integration of different forms of expertise is to describe the process as a case of perspectives in dialogue. Co-design and co-production approaches encourage perspective taking and use group processes and facilitation to support community consensus building. It is through such collaborative and relational processes that common objections against the legitimacy of expertise by experience can be addressed
