Respondents comprised 39 upgraded B/C to A teachers, 19 head teachers from primary schools with upgraded grade A teachers, 14 ward Education Coordinators and 12 District School Inspectors. They filled questionnaires and open ended interview questions. The findings show that the upgraded grade A teachers are incompetent in teaching Mathematics in standards V to VII due to lacking content knowledge of Mathematics but used limited teaching strategies to teach standards I to IV. This is an important feedback to tutors and Ministry officials to arrange for in-service courses for capacity building academically and professionally in Mathematics. It is recommended that candidates intending to enter the teaching profession must pass Mathematics at CSEE. For further research, more case studies are recommended to gauge the pervasiveness of the problem not only in Mathematics but also in English

Over dependency of donor funding for development programs particularly health interventions for people living with HIV/AIDS have proved not to be sustainable and have major adverse effect to beneficiaries when funding came to an end. Over 95% of HIV/AIDS resources in Tanzania are financed by donors while 10% of total Government of Tanzania spending accounts for HIV/AIDS. Sources of funding for HIV/AIDS in Tanzania flows from, Government Consolidated fund, external Sources and locally collected revenue. Literature also suggests that internal funding specifically from the public private sector can continue to support People Living with HIV/AIDS compared to external funding which are limited and have time bound. This project was conducted for the purpose of documenting the experience of taping internal resources from the public private sector through fund raising activities for the purpose of supporting PLHIV. Different participatory approaches were used during the designing, implementation and monitoring of the project. Through community needs assessment the community was able to identify the most pinching problem and suggest possible solution. The study revealed that in Tanzania there is a big potential resource from the public private sector that can be tapped and support People Living with HIV/AIDS. This project therefore aims at “Extend Support for programs of PLHIV by involving public private sector” and it has been envisaged that PLHIV can be supported through internal funding do not have time limit neither conditions compared to external funding sources

Determinants of Residential Demand for Electricity in Tanzania (1974-2009)

    Get PDF
This thesis attempts to review some crucial aspects in determination of electricity demand for residential customers in the country. In this connection, it estimates the price elasticity of residential demand for electricity in Tanzania. It does so by using cointegration and error correction procedures, with key variables identified as the domestic electricity tariff, per capita income, size of the population, price of kerosene, and overall energy utilization from 1974 till 2009.Major findings of the thesis are that electricity demand for residential customers is inelastic in both short run and long run. In addition, the short run elasticity of residential demand for electricity is higher than the long run electricity contrary to the empirical literature. The thesis concludes that the investment requirements to fulfill the projected demand for the next 15 years towards our national development vision 2025 are enormous. The high projected demand emanates from the rapidly increasing demand and the need to increase availability of electricity service to the population. In addition, tariff reforms are necessary to support competitive power market development and to strengthen the power utilities’ financial position

    Get PDF
Carpentry activities are known income generating activities employing many youths and other age groups in towns. There are 31 operational carpentry groups in Mpanda town council but their economic and employment creation potential is not well known as there are no proper records. Community needs assessment revealed the problems facing the groups and the community came up with the project to address them. Explorative, descriptive, observational and investigative research designs were employed in assessing the groups. 21 carpentry groups were sampled through stratified sampling to fill questionnaires and purposive sampling for individuals to be interviewed. Literature review, survey, observation, and focus group discussions are other methodologies employed to carry out the assessment. The findings indicate that groups get little support from the district authority, 57.1% lacks premises for their activities hence are scattered all over Mpanda town. Again, 100% of the carpentry groups are not registered, carpenters are males and lack of capital is their main problem. Lack of some important business skills contributed to groups failure to keep financial records and prepare income and expenditure report for their businesses. This confirmed that lack of capital is not the genuine problem but the groups do not meet the conditions set by the financial institutions to qualify for loans. A one day capacity building training was conducted to improve business skills of the carpentry groups. The training jointly planned and facilitated by a researcher who funded it and relevant Mpanda Town Council department to ensure sustainability. Participants requested more training of that nature in future
