CMFRI and INCOIS join hands to boost research on oceanography, fisheries management Lokmat Times 14th June 2024
To ensure India's marine fish stocks are used responsibly and last for future generations, the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) on Thursday. This agreement allows them to collaborate on various operational oceanography, fishery oceanography, fishing advisories, ecology, GIS application, biodiversity, fisheries management, and geosciences. This will also involve sharing resources and personnel for focused research efforts
Fishery and biology of cobia and snubnose pompano
Rachycentron canadum,
cobia, a fast-growing
pelagic fish belongs to the
monotypic family Rachycentridae,
is widely distributed in tropical,
subtropical, and warm temperate
waters of >20°C temperature
and totally absent in central and
eastern Pacific Ocean (Fig 1.).
It makes seasonal migrations
in connection with changes in
water temperature and also for
spawning. In the Chesapeake Bay,
cobia was found to enter the bay
in early June, and leave by midOctober (Richards 1977). Arracott
(1977) indicated that cobia from
southern Indian Ocean waters
may move north to spawn off
the coast of Arabia. Smith and
Heemstra (1986) reported that
cobia migrate to South African
waters during the austral summer,
occasionally reaching False Bay.
Cobia associate with larger fish,
such as rays and sharks, and sea
turtles (Baughman 1950). It is so
well known that fishermen often
consider schools of large rays to be
indicators of cobia (McNally 1985,
Moe 1970)
Study of shark and ray non-fin commodities in India
This report is the outcome of a study on shark and ray non-fin commodities in India, carried out by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI) for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and funded by FAO. The study recognizes the role of shark non-fin commodities in nutrition, trade and livelihoods and seeks to enhance the understanding of shark product utilization in India, which will complement India’s national plan of action on sharks and support policy matters on sharks

Fishery and stock dynamics of ribbonfish Trichiurus lepturus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone
The fishery and stock dynamics of Trichiurus lepturus (Linnaeus, 1758) were studied in
the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for the period 2014-2019. The average annual
landing was 2,09,285 t and varied from 1,77,259 to 2,39,355 t. Trawl nets were the major
gear, contributing more than 85% with an average annual catch rate of 4.56 kg h-1. The
annual catch rate decreased over the years from 5.40 to 3.85 kg h-1. Landings (23,155-40,354 t)
and catch rates (4.24-8.67 kg h-1) were highest during the post-monsoon months
(September-December). Around 63% of the landings (1,32,072 t) were from the north-west
coast, with Gujarat alone contributing three-fourth (98,296 t) of it, followed by the
south-west coast (17%, 36,017 t), the south-east coast (12%, 25,322 t) and the north-east
coast (8%, 15,875 t). The von Bertalanffy’s growth equation was Lt
= 143.8 [1-e–0.48 (t + 0.03285)].
Natural mortality, Exploitation ratio and Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) were 0.76; 0.65
and 1,59,504 t respectively. Recruitment was substantial throughout the year with a single
modal peak during June-October. With lower lengths at first capture and recruitment and
with exploitation above the maximum permissible level and landings higher than MSY; the
species appears to be overexploited along the Indian coasts. The present study is the first
holistic report on the population parameters and stock status of T. lepturus from the Indian
EEZ
Coastal cage farming of marine finfish, Indian Pompano
Cage farming technology is widely recognized as one of the most important
culture technologies in mariculture for increasing fish production. High
saline estuaries are one of the unified ecosystems, considered for improving
the livelihood of selected rural population. In India, huge estuarine resources are
available bordering the coasts and these potentially available under-utilized high
saline waters bodies, could be efficiently utilized by culturing different species of
finfishes in cages installed thereof. Different species of marine finfishes can be
cultured in high saline estuarine cages and Indian pompano (Trichinous mookalee),
is one such suitable potential candidate species. Pompano is a preferred species for
cage culture with the following characteristics; quick adaptability to different culture
conditions, ease of accepting artificial pellet feed, tolerant to wide range of salinity,
fast growth rate and high consumer preference. Understanding the culture
characteristics of the fish, coastal cage culture technology for the species was
developed and demonstrated under blue revolution scheme by Government of
Indiaby ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute. Various steps involved
in cage culture of the species are explained below

Mated Shiny bird squid, Ornithoteuthis volatilis Sasaki, 1915 (Cephalopoda:Ommastrephidae), in the southeastern Arabian Sea
Shiny bird squid is a nerito-oceanic species of squid distributed in the
Indo-West Pacific oceans. Two individuals of female Shiny bird squid,
Ornithoteuthis volatilis, from the Arabian Sea collected by trawl catch
are reported. The dorsal mantle length of the individuals was 148 mm
and 76 mm, with a body weight of 46 g and 28 g, respectively. The
maturing female had 13 implanted spermatangium, located on the
aboral surface of the third left arm. The length of the implanted
spermatangium ranged from 1.10 to 1.38 mm. The current study
proposes additional research to better understand the species
population and fisheries potential in the Arabian Sea
Milk vs Plant Based Dairy Analogues: Myths and Facts
Milk and milk products have been an integral part of human diet since ancient times
and currently recognized as a functional foods due to increasing scientific evidences
attributing to their health promoting and disease alleviating virtues. ‘White revolution’
transformed the landscape of Indian agriculture, leading not only to self-sufficiency in
milk production, but also improved socio-economic scenario across the nation. Dairying
is considered as holistic and sustainable solution for livelihood, and nutritional security
of India. Even in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 2030, dairying is directly
related with 11 out of 17 action points. Recent Covid-19 pandemic has revitalized the
immunomodulatory properties of milk nutrients
